Rugs are particularly vulnerable to getting dirty, dusty, and accumulating allergens and debris within a short period. It is advisable to rent and use a rug cleaning machine; however, this is not always possible. Fortunately, there are some proven ways to clean rugs without using machines that would require significant amounts of muscle power. At the end of the process, you will have some clean rugs with the help of simple supplies and hard work.
To choose the appropriate cleaning method, determine what type of fiber your rug is made from. The most common rug fabrications are wool, cotton, jute, silk, synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon, and many others. What cleaning solutions and techniques you can apply without causing harm to the material is defined by the material used. In general, natural fiber rugs, including wool and cotton, are more suitable for rough washing and aggressive cleaners. Some fabrics, such as silk and synthetic materials, call for softer processes.
The initial process always involves vacuuming the top surface and base of the rug. It helps to pick up dry dirt and dust from the fabric, so the dirt won’t be rubbed into the fibers during washing. Ensure you use the correct vacuum head to cover the entire rug pile. Focus more on areas that receive heavy traffic.
In general, natural fiber rugs are more robust, and you can use hand scrubbing when washing them with a cleaning solution. In warm water, add a portion of mild liquid dish soap or laundry detergent. To clean a rug with oxidized bleach stains, dampen it with the solution and then scrub the affected areas of the carpet with a soft bristle scrub brush. Avoid creating excessive suds. Wash in clear water and then gently blot with clean towels. It is advisable to allow the rug to dry for some time before rearranging any furniture on the carpet.
Baking soda is a multipurpose cleaning agent that removes odors from rugs. To do this, you simply have to spread a thick layer of baking soda over the entire aspect of the carpet. It is left to stand for several hours, ideally overnight, to absorb odors and soak up grease and dirt. Then, all you have to do is vacuum the baking soda, and the rug will smell fresh and clean.
Another product that can be used to clean and deodorize rugs is white vinegar. Dilute 1-part white vinegar with one part water and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture over the stained area on the rug, and then, using a soft brush, scrub the area. The vinegar solution assists in loosening dirt and neutralizing smells. Wipe the carpet with a clean cloth and then let it dry before vacuuming the residue left behind on the rug.
If you do not wish to wash your rug, then consider using a dry carpet cleaning powder. Spread the cleaner all over the rug so that it covers the entire surface of the carpet. Allow it to stand for up to 30 minutes. The powder gets into the fibers and sweeps the dirt up to the surface. Last but not least, take the vacuum cleaner and run it over the surface to pick up the dry cleaner along with the dirt and debris for that clean-looking rug.
Although these generic methods can be helpful in cleaning rugs for mild dirt accumulation, they probably cannot produce the same results as a rented rug cleaning machine for rugs that have accumulated more dirt or have stains that are more challenging to deal with. If you have a giant area rug, a rug made from delicate fabric, or a carpet that receives a lot of traffic from pets and kids, professional rug cleaners should occasionally come in to clean the carpet with truck-mounted equipment.
As part of general rug maintenance, vacuum high-traffic areas more than twice daily and the entire rug once daily. Accidents should be dealt with as soon as possible to avoid stains setting in; first, absorb any excess liquid, then clean the area with the right solution, depending on the type of rug. Maybe it is wise to use rugs in the regions that are used most, for instance, in the hallways and doorways. Finally, do not forget to turn the carpet over and clean both sides of it. As we have seen, proper care should be taken to keep the rugs clean, and the appropriate cleaning technique should be applied to clean the rugs.
